To All Fourth Year BComs,

This is a reminder that the MIS Division is announcing for 2012/13 a sequence of two project courses for the MIS /BTM (Business Technology Management) option (as first or second option) and BCOMM BUCS (Combined Major in Business and Computer Science) option. The courses are intended only for students in their last year of studies who have already taken several MIS/BTM courses.
In these courses students will be engaged in a two-term team project with the objective of studying and developing a new IT-based product, service or process. A project may involve a new startup idea. Students will have the opportunity to interact with business professionals who will be project mentors and to attend talks by professionals with experience in developing IT-based products and services and/or developing new businesses.
If you qualify for the course it can be your opportunity to explore and test ideas for new IT-related business with guidance by industry experts.
The courses are recognized as electives and the second of them can be considered towards fulfilling one of the Year 4 Commerce core course requirements (e.g. COMM 491, 492, 497, 498).

The courses will be taught in a 3-hour evening class held once per week for the duration of Terms 1 and 2  (schedule still to be determined). Therefore, CO-OP students in work terms can also participate.

The APEX Global Business IT Case Challenge is an annual undergraduate Business IT case competition hosted by SMU’s School of Information Systems in Singapore. Case scenarios encompass Information Systems solutions, corporate transformation imperatives, and business impacts.

Your team must meet the following criteria in order to compete in the APEX Global Business IT Case Challenge.

• Participation in APEX 2012 tryouts is in teams of 3 undergraduate students.
• The Sauder School of Business may send a team of three 3rd or 4th year students in the BUCS or BCOM program.
• Two team members must either be a BUCS or BCOM student who have designated BTM as his/her option.
• The third team member must have completed COMM 391, COMM 335, and one other BTM course by April 2012.

Job Descriptions

Co-Presidents (Elected)

• Heads the BizTech executive team and gives the final approval of all decisions made
• Leads team planning on events, conferences and workshops and provides direction of the club
• Responsible for calling and conducting all meetings, including the Annual General Meeting/s
• Responsible for securing CUS Industry Club status
• Responsible for updating the club constitution
• Develop relationships with other clubs, faculty and industry
• Mentor and support BizTech Network members through qualified advice and informal mentorship sessions

Vice-President, Finance

• Responsible for creating and submitting the club budget on time
• Responsible for all finances of BizTech and ensure that the budget is being followed
• Responsible for bringing financial issues during each meeting, including planning budgets for each event and overall club financial position
• Read treasurer’s handbook and ensure that all budget policies are met
• Responsible for timely reimbursements of members
• Responsible for applying for all AMS, CUS related funds; act as liaison to the finance commission and CUS Vice-President, Finance
• Responsible for collecting and depositing all revenue received in each event
• Act as signing officer of the club

Vice-President, Internal

• Responsible for sending out newsletters and all correspondences with members
• Responsible for organizing news articles for the newsletters
• Responsible for booking venues for all events and club meetings
• Responsible for taking minutes in meetings
• Responsible for resolving internal club conflicts and issues

Vice-President, External

• Act as a liaison between BizTech and the industry (often work with faculty)
• Act as a liaison between BizTech and other clubs within and outside of Sauder
• Represent BizTech on the CUS Corporate Relations team
• Responsible for compiling a list of corporate sponsors and making a CR package
• Responsible for organizing ‘Day at a Firm’ events

Vice-President, Marketing

• In charge of the BizTech online presence
• Responsible for taking pictures during events and uploading to BizTech website and Facebook
• Responsible for recruiting and managing a subcommittee of 3 or 4 to help with promotions and advertisement
• Responsible for the marketing and designing of promotional materials of all BizTech events
• Responsible for communicating with the CUS Vice-President, Marketing

Vice-President, Logistics

Enterprise Architecture (EA) is the process of translating business vision and strategy into effective enterprise change by creating, communicating and improving the key requirements, principles and models that describe the enterprise’s future state and enable its evolution.

Practitioners of EA call themselves enterprise architect – a person responsible for performing this complex analysis of business structure and processes and is often called upon to draw conclusions from the information collected. By producing this understanding, architects are attempting to address the goals of Enterprise Architecture: Effectiveness, Efficiency, Agility, and Durability.

The Futures in Information Technology (FIT) Conference is UBC BizTech Network’s signature event. The primary goal of FIT is to enhance students’ awareness of the strategic value of IT assets to businesses and what IT knowledge and skills business managers must have in today’s rapidly changing business environment.

The FIT conference will be designed to let all undergraduate students understand how IT has impacted different functional areas in businesses and motivate them to integrate BTM into their studies. The theme for the FIT 2012 is “IT and the Manager’s job”. In collaboration with the MIS Division, the UBC BizTech Network wants to provide over 100 UBC undergraduate students an incredible networking and learning experience.

Speakers

Speakers from different functional areas will give participants an overview of their jobs and how they have applied their IT knowledge and skills in their work. In particular, they will describe what role they play in integrating IT into the business processes in their respective areas. This will allow students to learn how business managers use IT to add value to their business and what IT knowledge and skills a manager should possess. Each speaker will speak for about 10-12 minutes. It will be followed by a panel discussion which provides students an opportunity to ask intuitive questions as well as allowing some alumni and guests to share their experience.
